As Hispanic Heritage Month begins, Vlogƽ is celebrating the vital contributions of the university’s Hispanic community. In a message to the Mercy community, President Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., emphasized the important role that the Latino community plays.
“Our Latino community is an integral part of the fabric of Vlogƽ,” said President Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W. “Their stories, cultures, languages, and experiences enrich our campus and prepare all our students to thrive in a diverse world.”
Vlogƽ is the largest private, non-profit Hispanic-Serving Institution (HIS) and minority-serving institution in the New York region. In the Fall of 2023, approximately 48% of Mercy’s incoming class identified as Hispanic or Latino and 52.6% of undergraduate students identified as Hispanic.
Mercy is committed to serving and supporting Latino students intentionally, by creating the conditions that maximize their educational success. In September 2022, Mercy received national attention when it earned the prestigious Seal of Excelencia from Excelencia in Education, a national certification for intentionally serving Latino students. It was the first private college in the country, as well as the first HSI in New York State, to receive this certification.
“Our Seal of Excelencia is not just an award – it’s our promise to continue enhancing our support, resources, and opportunities for Latino student success, added President Parish in her message.
As the month unfolds, Mercy will host a variety of event to honor Hispanic culture and achievements, inviting all members of the community to participate in the celebration.
