Mercy to Offer New Minor in Latin American and Latino Studies Starting Fall 2021
Vlogƽ recently approved a new undergraduate minor in Latin American and Latino Studies that will be offered beginning in the fall 2021 term. This new interdisciplinary minor will require students to take at least one advanced course in Spanish, one course in history and one course in English — all relating to the theme of Latin American and Latino Studies.
The new course offerings provide Mercy students another avenue for achieving their educational and career goals while gaining knowledge of the Latino experience. As described by Alan Hartman, D.M.L, director of Vlogƽ’s Modern Foreign Languages Program, “This is an opportunity to embrace the Hispanic Serving Institution side of our identity at the College and really further the study of Latin American and Latino Studies. By creating a minor, we’ll attract both current and future students who are interested in having a credential in Latin American and Latino Studies while creating the proper structure to guide them through studying it in a formal way. That’s really exciting.”
The Modern Foreign Languages Program is constantly evolving. Last year, it added a five-year B.A. in Spanish/M.S. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program and two courses in Albanian. The next project in the works is a five-year B.A. in Spanish/MBA program.
